Polls Chief Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday dropped three parties from the list of recognized political parties.

A senior spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat told The Island that the National Unity Alliance (NUA) formed by SLMC founder leader the late A. H. M. Ashraff, the People’s Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT) formed by the LTTE and the Eelam People’s Democratic National Front (ENDLF) had been removed from the list due to failure on their part to submit relevant documents required for renewing their registration. "The parties are also required to send their annual statements of accounts in terms of the new law," the official said.

Before yesterday’s announcement, the Elections Secretariat’s list of recognized political parties comprised 67 groups.
