Retired Gen. Sarath Fonseka who is in military custody has given up his fast since Monday evening after the authorities concerned allowed him to make calls to his two daughters.

JVP sources told the Daily Mirror yesterday that Gen. Fonseka had started taking food.

He staged his fast on Saturday night demanding that he be allowed to speak to his two daughters over the phone.

The military insisted that Gen. Fonseka should only use a telephone line provided by them for this purpose. However, Gen. Fonseka did not agree to it, but remained rigid in his stand that he should be given the opportunity to use his wife’s cell phone for it.

According to JVP sources, Gen. Fonseka’s wife Anoma Fonseka had taken food for her husband on Monday night after he gave up the fast.
