About 80 per cent of the de mining operations in areas demarcated for resettlement in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu have been completed, the Army Engineering Corp said yesterday.

It said about four square kilometres were being cleared each day and at that rate the operations could be completed in two years as against the nine years earlier estimated.

The Army said 24 modern remote control machines were being employed for de mining and that they were being helped by six international organizations and two local organizations.

The Divisional Secretaries in the affected areas have been entrusted with the task of carrying out settlement in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu as an when clearing operations are completed.
